Poverty creates a vicious cycle of handicaps and troubles that are passed on from one generation to another. The impact on people’s lives is great. It is a major cause of poor housing and living conditions, lack of basic hygiene, transmission of diseases, selfdestructing habits such as alcohol and substance abuse and crippling accidents due to unsafe working conditions. Children are the most vulnerable victims of poverty and it reflects on their lack of education, malnutrition, child labor and violence. Discrimination and social exclusion often leads them to antisocial behavior and aggressiveness. Society as a whole is affected by poor distribution of wealth and income inequality. Poverty causes social tensions and threatens to destabilize entire countries. The lack of jobs and high poverty levels may lead to revolts, the Arab Spring being one such example.
